In this week’s Parsha, Joseph’s powers of dream interpretation catapult him from the pit of an Egyptian dungeon to becoming second in command to the most powerful nation in the world approximately 3500 years ago. Of course, we see the root of his future rise in last week’s Parsha when he had the dream of the stars and sheaves bowing down to him. Things looked pretty bleak at the end of last weeks Parsha when the Torah says that the wine butler forgot Joseph. However, with the aid of the codes we see that his salvation was alluded to in the last words of last weeks Parsha which connect to the first two words of this week’s Parsha , .en hvhu : uvjfahu ;ouh ,t oheanv ra rfz tku “And the wine butler did not remember Joseph, and he forgot him. And it was at the end…” (Genesis 40:23- 41:1) If we take the acronym of the encircled letters, it spells the term, hump, pitzui, which means compensation. This term can be found in the questions and answers of the Orech Mishpat and Igros Moshe. In fact, Joseph was well compensated when he was given a special name by Pharoah, Tsafnas Pa’aneach, (Genesis 41:45), which means explainer of hidden things according to Rashi. In this term we also see a reference to compensation as the encoded letters of the phrase, ,bot ,t i,hu jbgp ,bpm ;ouh oa vgrp trehu, “And Pharaoh called Joseph , Tsafnas Pa’aneach, and he gave him Osnas…as a wife” (Genesis 41:45). The encoded letters spells the term hump, pitzui, . Hence, we see that the compensation of Joseph was a great and important job and a wife. According to Rabbeinu Bachya, Osnas was actually the daughter of Dinah. We can see another insight based on Gematria. According to Rabbeinu Bachya, Pharaoh was told the meaning of his dream but he simply forgot it. With aid of Gematria we see that interpretation is confirmed as the term , uvjfahu , and he forgot, and Pharaoh , share the same Gematria of 355. Hence, not only did the butler forget about Joseph, but Pharaoh forgot the meaning of his dreams. We see Another interesting interpretation from Gematria. One of the main features of the dream was that Pharaoh was standing over the nile and then he changed his story to Joseph and said that he was at the bank of the nile. According to Rabbeinu Bachya, Pharaoh was actually standing over the nile as the Torah was objective. However, Pharoah changed it in deference to Joseph. Now, the Gematria of the oukhb Nile is 156. Another word with the same Gematria is 156. Hence Joseph had the power to decipher the dream as he shared the same Gematria as the nile. He also tied in to the spiritual home of the children of Israel and that is the Beis Hamikdosh or Holy Temple. Joseph told him the following: vgrp ouka ,t vbgh ohekt hsgkc rntk vgrp ,t ;ouh ihgu , “And Joseph answered Pharaoh, it is beyond me, God will answer the welfare of Pharaoh” (Genesis 41:16). If we take the acronym of the encircled letters (rearranged), it spells the word vhrnv, Moriah, which is the site of the Temple Mount. May God reward us with the rebuilding of the Holy Temple and may the light of the Menorah always shine brighter and brighter.
