The Torah is our Light

At the end of last week’s Parsha we read the following, ,sgv irt kt

ohcrfv hba ihcn , upon the ark of the testimony between the two angels (Numbers 7:89).
The encoded letters spells the word ohb,b , meaning given. This word can be found in this week’s Parsha where it says the followinghk vnv ohb,b ohb,b hf for they are given given to me…(Numbers ). This section tells us that the Levites were sanctified in their service to God. According to the interpretation of Rabbi Avigdor Miller, “given is repeated for emphasis. It teaches us that the Levites were chosen to serve God forever. Now that we found this term encoded by the Ark of the Testimony, it means that the Torah, which was inside it, is forever given to the Children of Israel.

In this Parsha, Aaron is instructed regarding the lighting of the Menorah. Many commentators say that this alludes to Chanuka as the last Parsha dealt with the inauguration services of the Princes.  It was called Chanukas Hamizbeach, meaning dedication of the altar, which is similar to Chanuka.   According to Dr. Ari Friedman we find an interesting allusion to Chanuka in this week’s Parsha since this is the 36th Parsha and we light a total of 36 lights during an eight night period. From a kabbalistic standpoint, we learn that 36 stands for double chai (life). It is a sign of blessing. We see an allusion to this from the Torah and our Shema Yisroel prayers as the paragraph that promises us material blessing has exactly 36 words (Deuteronomy -15). This means that if we listen and observe God’s commandments it will give us material blessings.  Material blessings are fine. What about our spirit? Where do find an allusion to that? From the term VRvrbn Menorah (Candelabrum)  itself . If we take the revealed and hidden letters of the term, vrbn, we have the following letters, (t)v -(ah)r-(iu)b -(o)n The hidden and revealed letters (4) spells the word vnab, soul. According to King Solomon, he says, ost ,nab 'v rb, “the lamp of God is the soul of man” (Proverbs 20:27). The last letters (rearranged) spells v,rn, marasah. This alludes to the Sabbath as we learned about this holy day during our stay in Marah. This means that we especially shine on this day.

According to Rabbi Avigdor Miller, it is from this Parsha that we learn that the events in the Torah are not in chronological order based on the law of Pesach Sheni (2nd Passover).
He brings down Pesachim (6b) where Rabbi Menashya says the following;

vru,c rjutnu oseun iht , the Torah is not written in chronological order. If we take the last letters of this phrase, it spells (you guessed it)  vrbn. This teaches us that just like God is eternal , so is his Torah. It is relevant every day, every minute. We could even see a link to the world cup. In this week’s Parsha it discusses the nature of  the travels. The tribes went by their flags with their unique symbols( ie. Lion, serpent, wolf, ox, ship etc.).
We witness today many cars carrying the flags of their native countries and people walking and carrying their flags (ie South Korea, Italy, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago etc). Remember, it was only a few week ago when we saw 20 thousand people marching for Israel, and many of them were carrying Israeli flags.  If that is inspiring just imagine the scene of the thousands upon thousands of the Children of Israel walking with their flags of the native tribe. What a great show of support for the One Above. In fact the service of God is through his Torah. The Torah says, rnthu uhrjcn van ,ran iub ic gauvh ighu ,
“And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses since his youth, answered and said..”

If we take the acronym of the encircled letters (rearranged) it spells vru, , Torah. Hence we see that the servant of Moses was really serving God through His Torah.

On a final note, the Torah begins with lights and ends with lights. We see this with the aid of the codes. The Torah says, irtp rcsnc ubjhu ,urmjn ogv ugxb rjtu , “and after the nation traveled from Chatzeiros and they encamped in the wilderness of Paran”
(Numbers )  The encoded letters in reverse spells ,urb , candles, lights. Hence we see that the journeys through the deserts were really enlightening. May we also be enlightened by the Torah in our journeys in life.
