Redemption through Justice

In last week’s Parsha, we received the Ten Commandments. In this week’s Parsha, we

are introduced to the Civil Laws. As these laws are given by G-d, they are the most just in

the universe. Let’s take a brief look at some of the topics covered in this Parsha. We learn

about the rules of the Jewish slave, intentional murder, manslaughter, penalty for causing

bodily harm, payment for lost time and for healing, goring & damage caused by the ox

(today- cars/planes/boats), damage caused by an open pit, damage caused by an animal,

theft by stealing livestock, rules of custodians, caring for the helpless and stranger, free

loans, not accepting false reports, not accepting a bribe, the observance of the Sabbath

and the three pilgrimage festivals and the prohibition of cooking the mixture of meat

and milk. Thereafter, the Torah tells us that we will quickly conquer and settle the Land

of Israel. The Torah is advising us that if we do acts of justice and kindness, we will be

redeemed. Indeed, as told to me by Rabbi Goldberger (SI, NY), the Prophet Isaiah says

,1 “Zion will be redeemed through justice, and those who

was under constant threat and pressure . Nonetheless, King David always praised Hashem

for giving him the gift of the Torah that was his light in his days of darkness. Even

shofet alludes to judgment day which we associate with someone who just died. The

a body are all that are left after our soul leaves the body.

As noted previously, the Parsha of the week influences current events. In this week’s

Torah reading, it focuses on the relations between man and man. It specifically warns us

not to take a bribe. We learn of two bribe stories this week (2/16/07) with the

investigation of the governor of Nevada, Jim Gibbons, where emails that were intercepted

said, “please don’t forget to bring the money you promised Jim and Dawn” and the guilty

plea of Jim Black the House Speaker of North Carolina, who admitted receiving cash

payments from chiropractors. This week we endured a lot of wicked weather including

freezing cold and much snow. We can deduce from the Torah’s laws of property to keep

our sidewalks clean and free from snow and ice so that we don’t hurt ourselves and others.
